What are wider fit shoes?

What are wider fit shoes?

You often hear the term wider fit shoes, but what does this actually mean?

When it comes to width, people usually categorise their feet as simply narrow, standard or wide. Wider fit is a general term to describe anything that would be a wider fitting than the shoes you typically find on the high street.

Wider Fit Shoes Range From An E Fitting to an 8E Fitting

Technically, standard width shoes are classified as a D fitting. Wider fit shoes range from an E fitting to an 8E fitting. The difference between an E-width fitting (a little wider than high street shoes) and an 8E fitting (extremely wide with extra depth) is huge!

As you can see, the term wider fit shoes is very general and not that helpful when it comes to finding shoes that fit correctly.

Companies often use the term to let customers know they offer wider fittings. However, it doesn't tell customers what width they are or how many width fittings they have in stock. We often find companies use this term but only have one wide fitting available.

If you want to know more about width fittings, we have an in-depth article on the different width fittings for you to read. It covers the different width fittings and explains how they differ. For example, did you know that once shoes go to a 4E fitting, footwear starts to get deeper as well as wider to accommodate medical foot conditions such as bunions, oedema and hammertoes?
